Don’t let robust sales fool you: The short-term “buzz” of Red Bull and its clones is losing appeal among consumers and investors. Lately, notes Ferrier, the money is on “natural alternatives for boosting energy and alternatives to caffeine.” Take proteins, for example-especially those from vegetarian and “natural” sources. The macronutrient, Ferrier notes “was at the heart of some significant deals in 2014,” including Hormel Foods’ acquisition of Muscle Milk, and Glanbia’s purchase of Isopure protein drinks and powders.
