According to supplements brand Macular Health, a recent study showed that its supplement for age-related macular degeneration dissolves up to five-and-a-half times faster than other leading eye vitamin supplements.

Macular Health says that its product dissolves in 12 minutes, while competing brands can take up to 65 minutes to dissolve.

“This news is important to macular degeneration sufferers because the U.S.  Pharmacopeia (USP) Committee of Revision recently set standards to test the ability of oral nutrient delivery systems to disintegrate and dissolve in the human digestive tract. USP standards state that dietary supplements, such as Macular Health, should breakdown into their subcomponents within 15 to 30 minutes for the body to absorb the full amount of nutrients in the pill or tablet,” the company states.

The company alleges that other recent tests, similar to the one it just completed, have shown that a number of popular vitamins and supplements can take hours, or sometimes even days, to dissolve, especially in older adults. Most studies show that only 5 to 10% of vitamin nutrients are absorbed from slow-to-dissolve pills and tablets.

The company says that Macular Health has been tested for both short- and long-term vision improvement in the Multifocal Electroretinogram (MERG) studies conducted at the Callahan Eye Foundation Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. It says that MERG researchers reported an average 16% improvement in retina function after 12 weeks of supplementation and a 17% overall improvement after two years of taking Macular Health.
