Cyanotech Corp. (Kailua-Kona, HI) submitted a new Dietary Ingredient (NDI) petition to increase the daily dosage of its natural astaxanthin ingredient from 7.8 mg to 12 mg.

Cyanotech Corp. (Kailua-Kona, HI) has received FDA approval to increase the daily dosage of its natural astaxanthin ingredient from 7.8 mg to 12 mg.

Astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant derived from algae. It is responsible for the pink coloring of numerous animals, including salmon and flamingos.

The company petitioned for an updated New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) status for its Bioastin astaxanthin in order to satisfy a widening range of potential users.

"A daily serving of 4mg-8mg is fine for most people, but for people with certain conditions or individuals whose bodies absorb carotenoids poorly, higher levels are indicated," said Cyanotech, noting that human absorption rates have been recorded as high as 90% and as low as 5%.

Studies on astaxanthin and joint and tendon problems have demonstrated efficacy of the ingredient at servings of 12 mg daily.

Other astaxanthin brands still run on allowed usages of 4 mg to 7.8 mg.
