A study recently published in Nutrients1 demonstrated that a pomegranate extract (Pomanox from Euromed; Bridgeville, PA) may support performance in athletes. The study was conducted with male amateur cyclists by the Department of Exercise Physiology, San Antonio Catholic University of Murcia, Spain.

In the randomized, placebo-controlled trial, 26 cyclists were given either placebo or two capsules containing 375 mg of Pomanox, standardized to 30% punicalagins, for 15 days. During 14 of these days, subjects were subjected to two endurance tests each day designed to assess performance, followed by an eccentric exercise drill to evoke exercise induced muscle damage in order to assess the supplement’s impact on post-exercise biomarkers. Following a 14-day washout period, groups changed places in a crossover design, and the 15-day treatment/exercise period was repeated.

Results showed that subjects taking the pomegranate extract experienced significantly greater time to exhaustion, compared to placebo. According to researchers, based on previous research, improved stamina could be attributed to pomegranate’s role in nitric oxide formation during exercise, however, that was not measured during this trial. There were no significant differences between groups in post-exercise biomarkers.

“We are very pleased to see these promising results published though gold standard protocols, and at an established authoritative institution, as they provide further clear support for the efficacy and safety of our ingredients – in this instance, Pomanox,” said Andrea Zangara, scientific marketing manager at Euromed, in a press release.

Pomamox is available in certified organic, non-GMO, water soluble versions. Additionally, Euromed’s production is vertically integrated, using select fruits grown locally in Euromed’s Mediterranean region under strict and transparent quality control, and in close proximity to the manufacturing plant.
