Nutritional Outlook caught up with Steve Mister, president and CEO of the Council for Responsible Nutrition at Natural Products Expo West to discuss FDA's FY25 Legislative Proposals related to dietary supplements.

Excerpt of Steve Mister, president and CEO of the Council for Responsible Nutrition discussing modernizing DSHEA:

"We don't see any major FDA reform legislation moving forward in this year, simply as you said because of the politics, the national politics are are very divisive right now, very little is going to move through Congress that is not must pass...

"It's going to be hard to move them, but I I think the importance of FDA including [mandatory product listing] in this budget is that it is signaling to Congress that this is still a very important priority for them.

"And if it doesn't happen this year, they're certainly saying this is something we want to have a conversation about because we want to look at it for future years in 2025...This sort of sets the table to keep the conversation going around listing keep Congress thinking about it so that something might come along in 2025.

"I can say from the industry standpoint, we're looking at not just the listing piece of it, but a number of provisions that we think are necessary to modernize, to shape and bring it really into the 21st century.

"You know, [DSHEA is] 30 years old now and a lot has happened in 30 years in this industry. The bones of the law, the foundation is still good. The fundamental premise that there has to be consumer access to these products while at the same time some safeguards for safety. We don't want to mess with that. But there are a lot of things that need to be updated.

"Drug preclusion is one of those, mandatory listing, trying to make the inspection process more efficient for the agency. So from our standpoint, we're also looking at things that we can bring to the table next year to put together a package of reform that would modernize the law."
