A market research group says U.S. sales of agave recently doubled.
Innova Market Insights (Duiven, The Netherlands) reports that, during a 12-month period ending in March 2011, global sales of agave sugar and sweeteners hung at around 3%. At the same time, U.S. sales of the natural sweetener doubled.
Agave stands out from other sweeteners for its low-glycemic and purely vegan status.
Beyond sales as a stand-alone sweetener, Innova says agave was increasingly used as a sweetening ingredient in a range of global product launches, including soft drinks, sauces, cereals, and confectionery.
