Purina Animal Nutrition has selected Ahiflower, a plant-based omega-3 oil ingredient, to use in its equine supplements. Ahiflower is a proprietary ingredient of Natures Crops International. The Purina supplement containing Ahiflower is the Purina OmegaMatch Ahiflower Oil Supplement.

Purina’s product website states, “Ahiflower oil contains more omegas than other plant-based oils commonly fed to horses. The unique fatty acid delivers benefits associated with fish oil, evening primrose oil, olive oil, and flaxseed oil.”

Natures Crops says that Ahiflower offers “the richest combined omega-3 stearidonic acid (SDA) and omega-6 gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) levels and an 85% total polyunsaturated fatty acid content.” The company explains that Purina’s published research in horses found that Ahiflower oil had high palatability “and a capacity to more closely match the omega nutritional effects of pasture grasses in horses.” Said the supplier: “They quickly recognized that this would fill an important gap for horses that don’t have regular access to fresh pasture, hence the name ‘OmegaMatch.’”

Natures Crops’ CEO Andrew Hebard stated in a press release, “We believe Ahiflower oil is the most complete and balanced ‘multi-omega’ from a regeneratively grown plant source.”
