Nutriterra Total Omega-3 Canola Oil is “the world’s first plant-based source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids,” the company claims, as it combines omega-3 fatty acids DHA, EPA, and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).
Nuseed Nutritional U.S. Inc. (West Sacramento, CA), a supplier of plant-based ingredients, reports that FDA has acknowledged the company’s New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) notification for its unique canola oil omega-3 ingredient. The NDI notification report number is 1207.
Nutriterra Total Omega-3 Canola Oil is “the world’s first plant-based source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids,” the company claims, as it combines omega-3 fatty acids DHA, EPA, and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).
“We’ve applied plant-to-plant biotechnology to deliver the nutrition of microalgae through renewable, sensory-neutral canola,” the company describes on its website. “Until now, DHA+EPA was found exclusively in marine sources, mostly fish and algae. But our ocean cannot provide enough of this nutrient to meet human nutritional needs without depleting wild fish populations. Nutriterra fills the gap between how much omega-3 is needed and how little the ocean produces.”
The ingredient was developed in collaboration with Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). It is geared to both the human nutrition market as Nutriterra and the animal feed market as Aquaterra. The ingredient is certified by Friend of the Sea.
In a press release, Nuseed’s Nutritional General Manager Benita Boettner said, “FDA’s acknowledgment allows us to progress our plans to expand into the human nutrition market and meet a growing demand for plant-based DHA+EPA omega-3 options.”
According to the company’s press release, USDA “deregulated omega-3 canola for commercial planting in 2018.” The company says it already has approval for human food and animal feed in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, and is working on additional regulatory approvals in other key worldwide markets.
Nuseed Nutritional is a wholly owned subsidiary of Australian agricultural chemical supplier Nufarm Ltd.
