Marketers eyeing the pet-health industry are barking up the right tree. From omega-3 liquids and functional dog treats to oral-health probiotics and glucosamine/chondroitin supplements for joints, the animal supplements category is starting to show its teeth.
“As the economy improves, so should all things pet, but that recovery continues to appear modest,” said David Lummis, senior pet market analyst for Packaged Facts, in January. “Spending on supplements will increase, but ‘restraint’ will likely continue to characterize how pet owners shop and what they buy during 2011 and even 2012.”
Ingredient suppliers are paying more attention to our furry friends and their condition-specific needs. Ecuadorian Rainforest (Belleville, NJ) is promoting a new natural ingredient line for pets called Napoleon’s Choice, named after the line’s “spokes-dog.” It includes ingredients for aches and pains, allergies, anxiety, digestion, energy, joint care, reproductive health, and uterine infections.
In December, Ganeden Biotech (Cleveland) announced a line of chewable dog supplements containing the company’s Ganeden BC30 Bacillus coagulans probiotic strain. The line was developed in partnership with Sprinks Pets.
