Arla Foods Ingredients (Viby, Denmark) has announced that whey permeate can now be exported to China for use in food and beverage applications. Whey permate is a milk solid containing about 80% lactose, and is used as a bulking agent, is a cost-effective replacement for skimmed milk powder, lactose, as well as sweet whey powder. On May 15, 2020, China published an official safety and quality standard for using permeate powders in food processing, signaling the readiness of its market to accept imports of the ingredient. This is the result of a recent trade agreement between the U.S. and China, but also applies globally.

“The opening of the Chinese market to permeate exports is highly significant for the global dairy ingredient industry,” said Henrik Jacob Hjortshoej, head of sales development, food at Arla Foods Ingredients, in a press release. “Demand for permeate is rising fast in China, just as it is across the world. We look forward to working with our customers in China to supply them with the highest quality whey permeate powder for their food and beverage applications.”

Arla is one of the largest suppliers of whey permeate in the world, with production facilities in the European Union and Argentina. Its Variolac whey permeate has a sweet milky taste, low ash content, stable mineral profile, and free-flowing powder properties over a 12-month shelf life, says the firm.
