DolCas Biotech, LLC (Landing, NJ) attained Health Canada natural product licenses for its concentrated turmeric extract, Curcugen, and Ginfort, a powdered ginger extract for digestion. Products with natural product licenses from Health Canada have been assessed by the agency and found to be safe, effective, and high quality under their recommended conditions of use.

Curcugen is a patent-pending composition of curcuminoids natively complexed to other naturally-occurring turmeric constituents in a turmeric oleoresin matrix in order to provide bioavailable enhancement. The extract is concentrated to 50% curcuminoids and water dispersible, making it uniquely suitable for diverse applications and high palatability for easy flavoring. Curcugen has been subject to three published clinical trials supporting its benefits in exercise recovey, healthy digestion and mood, as well as relief of joint discomfort. The results of an actively progressing clinical study investigating the extract’s effects on fatigue, cognitive performance, and mood are expected to be submitted to Health Canada to expand the license to include a diversity of claims and doses.

DolCas Biotech’s Ginfort, whch delivers 26% gingeroid compounds, including gingerols and shogoals, was approved by Health Canada for the following claims:

  • “Help(s) prevent nausea and vomiting associated with motion sickness and/or seasickness” while also allowing for broader digestive support claims informed by traditional medicine use.
  • The monograph for ginger permits the added claims language to parallel: “Traditionally used in Herbal Medicine to help relieve digestive upset/disturbances including lack of appetite, nausea, digestive spasms, indigestion, dyspepsia and flatulent colic (carminative);” “For use as a digestive support active;” and“Traditionally used in Herbal Medicine as an expectorant and cough suppressant (antitussive) to help relieve bronchitis as well as coughs and colds.”

“DolCas already is in discussion with several finished productmakers and private label companies interested in these brands,” said Shavon Jackson-Michel, ND, director of medical and scientific affairs for DolCasBiotech, in a press release. “We already have an office and sales support team in Canada to help companies seeking to include powerful antioxidant and digestive-support ingredients such as these in their product line.”
