Nattokinase
Nattokinase is a powerful natural enzyme derived from natto, a fermented soybean food product. Natto is made by adding the beneficial bacterium Bacillus natto to boiled soybeans through a fermentation process, yielding the enzyme nattokinase specific solely to natto. Nattokinase has been widely researched for its cardiovascular support properties and its ability to positively affect cholesterol levels. Cactus Botanics' Bacillus natto fermentations are performed with meticulous purification and concentration yielding high-purity and bioactive nattokinase. The white powder may then be mixed with dextrin or a similar carbohydrate for capsules and tablets. It is available in powders with dissolve activity of 12,000 fu/G and 20,000 fu/G. For more information, contact Cactus Botanics (Shanghai) by sending an e-mail to info@cactusbotanics.com.
Barrier Coating
Nanolok PT ADV-7 water-based coating provides a sustainable, cost-effective option for transparent food packaging with high oxygen and/or moisture barrier. By reducing the amount of barrier material needed and using only nonhazardous materials, this technology enables food companies to produce products with long shelf life and reduced carbon footprint and environmental impact. It lessens both material and process costs when compared with the lowest-cost transparent high-oxygen barrier material, ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH). According to the company, coating thicknesses of Nanolok PT ADV-7 in the range of 0.5–0.8 µm provide better oxygen barrier than 10–20 µm of EVOH and provide much better oxygen and moisture barrier when compared with polyvinylidene chloride–coated PET. Nanolok PT ADV-7 can be applied using commercial roll-coating equipment and provides performance competitive with more-expensive vacuum- and plasma-deposited coatings. Brown Seaweed Extract
A polysaccharide derived from brown seaweed called fucoidan contains no contaminants, solvents, or artificial treatments. It is processed from hand-harvested materials and dried naturally to preserve optimal moisture content at an organic-certified facility. Each batch of the fucoidan extract is tested for microbes, heavy metals, and FCC inorganic arsenic at three different independent laboratories. A 50% grade of the ingredient is also available for weight-management applications. For more information, contact AHD International (Atlanta) by visiting www.ahdintl.com or calling 404/233-4022.
Translucent CoQ10
A translucent soft gel contains CoQ10 and mixed tocopherols in a base of D-limonene. The formulation solubilizes and decrystallizes the CoQ10, ensuring a crystal-free supplement that does not require heat or synthetic solvents. Moreover, the soft gel resists crystallization at ambient temperatures. CoQsol-CF Translucent is available in 100-, 200-, 300-, and 400-mg doses. For more information, contact Soft Gel Technologies Inc. (Los Angeles) by visiting www.soft-gel.com or calling 323/726-0700.
Fine-Diced Frozen Vegetables
Individually quick frozen (IQF) fine-diced vegetables and IQF vegetable purees eliminate the need to handle fresh vegetables. The fine-diced size (from 1/8 in. and smaller, depending on the vegetable) allows all the properties of vegetables to be added, while still retaining some piece identity. Fine-diced ingredients are easy to add to any application, such as frozen entrees, appetizers, pizzas, dressings, dips, salsas, and soups.
The fine-diced product line includes garlic, white onion, green onion, shallots, chives, and a variety of peppers such as red and green bell peppers, jalapeño, habanero, and serrano. Custom blending is also available.
IQF vegetable purees are another convenient way to add fresh vegetable nutrition, flavor, aroma, and color to food products. The supplier's pureed line includes carrot, shallot, garlic, white onion, red onion, tomato, red bell pepper, poblano pepper, and habanero pepper. These vegetable purees are suited for use in soups, sauces, gravies, dips, dressings and marinades, pasta fillings, and more.
Each line of products is 100% natural, easy to handle, and available year-round. Fire roasting is an option as well, adding value and flavor to a product. Contact Van Drunen Farms (Momence, IL) by visiting www.vandrunenfarms.com or calling 815/472-3850.
Tapioca-Based Starch
Designed to meet the cold-prep processing needs of food manufacturers, a new high-viscosity starch offers a smooth, short, glassy texture suitable for a wide array of instant-food applications. Ultra-Tex 8 has good meltaway characteristics and a bland flavor profile, rendering it appropriate for puddings, sauces, pastry filling, and frozen or baked goods. The starch maintains its textural stability in cold storage and is also tolerant of heat and acidic conditions. Natural Zeaxanthin Beadlet
An all-natural zeaxanthin beadlet is now available in a 10% concentration. EZEyes beadlets can be added to powders, capsules, and tablets. The beadleting technology ensures that the zeaxanthin remains stable if it comes in contact with other ingredients. EZEyes is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) and can be used in foods and beverages. Food-Grade RPET Packaging Resin
Recognizing the potential for using recycled-PET (rPET) packaging for food-grade applications, a supplier introduced its LNOc food-grade rPET resin pellets. The pellets are formed by compacting finely ground powder using what the company calls "extremely small particle size" technology. The tiny particle sizes enable much more efficient decontamination of recycled resin compared with other processes, resulting in faster output and significant energy savings. According to the supplier, LNOc offers unique benefits over traditional rPET food-grade resins in terms of intrinsic viscosity (IV) or molecular weight properties, which more closely matches the IV found in virgin resins to enable better package performance. LNOc technology also produces rPET with superior color and yield compared with other methods. Further, it has lower AA levels, which positively impact taste properties.
The supplier expects most food-grade applications to run between 25 and 50% rPET, with the rest of a package comprising virgin resin, depending on individual product and processing parameters coupled with supply and economic impact. Flavonoids
Flavonoids are a specific class of antioxidants found only in the plant kingdom. These polyphenolic antioxidants serve to provide the vibrant colors to flowers, fruits, and berries, and also protect them from microbial and insect attacks. The potential health benefits of flavonoids, such as showing antiproliferative activity and supporting vein elasticity, immunity, and cognition, have recently become of particular interest to consumers and food manufacturers. The company has launched its first flavonoid line of nutraceuticals that include Nobiletin, Tangeritin, Diosmin, Apigenin, and Luteolin.
