Specifically, the algal oil has an EPA:DHA ratio of 1.5 : 1.
Dsm-Firmenich (Kaiseraugst, Switzerland) will soon launch an algae-based oil in North America that it says offers the same EPA:DHA ratio as standard fish oil does. Specifically, the life’sOMEGA O3O2O algal oil has an EPA:DHA ratio of 1.5 : 1. The company calls it “the first and only single-source algal omega-3 with the same EPA:DHA ratio naturally found in fish oil.”
In addition to providing the same ratio of EPA and DHA as in fish oil, life’sOMEGA O3O2O is also twice as potent as standard fish oil, the firm says. The natural, non-GMO ingredient is manufactured using a proprietary precision fermentation method.
The firm is proposing the ingredient as a sustainable and stable omega-3 source that addresses any limited availability of traditional fish oil. “This highly concentrated plant-based EPA and DHA solution will support greater supply security and help our customers achieve their sustainability goals, especially as life’sOMEGA O3O2O is produced in a controlled and closed environment, with zero impact on marine ecosystems,” said Brent MacDonald, director of global product marketing at Dsm-Firmenich, in a press release.
The ingredient will initially launch in North America “and is expected to achieve regulatory clearance in the U.S. as early as January 2024,” the company states.
