KEEPING REGULATORY NEEDS ON TRACK WITH PEA AS A CBD ALTERNATIVE

May 31st 2023, 8am PST | 11am EST | 5pm CET

This webcast is now available on demand.

Event Overview:

The Potential Benefits of PEA over CBD for Athletes

Starting at the beginning of 2018, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed CBD from the list of prohibited substances in or out of competition. The US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) did the same, but there is an important caveat: only CBD was removed from the prohibited list. The psychoactive component of marijuana, THC, is still prohibited in competition, as are synthetic cannabinoids. Despite the extensive use of CBD and international sports organizations now allowing its use, some CBD products have been shown to contain significant levels of other banned cannabinoids like THC (Lachenmeier and Diel, 2019).  Athletes require more information and advice as product labels can be misleading about whether they contain THC, meaning there are risks in terms of violating anti-doping rules (Mareck et al., 2021).

Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) is an endocannabinoid-like lipid mediator, primarily known for its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties. It appears to have a multi-modal mechanism of action by primarily activating the nuclear receptor PPAR-α while also potentially working through the ECS, thus targeting similar pathways as CBD. With proven efficacy in several therapeutic areas, its safety and tolerability profile, and the development of formulations that maximize its bioavailability, PEA is a promising alternative to CBD.
