Zero-Calorie Sweetener Based On Stevia LaunchedWAYZATA, MN — In response to strong consumer demand for a natural, zero-calorie way to sweeten foods and beverages, Cargill introduced TRUVIA brand (pronounced Tru-VEE-a) natural sweetener, a zero-calorie sweetener made from rebiana, best-tasting part of the stevia leaf according to Cargill. TRUVIA natural sweetener will provide consumers with a new, natural way to reduce calories in their diet while still enjoying sweet-tasting foods and beverages.“TRUVIA natural sweetener is a breakthrough new ingredient. This is a significant milestone for Cargill's emerging zero calorie sweetener business with application across food, beverage and tabletop products. We have spent more than two years validating the consumer demand for this new sweetener. Soon consumers will recognize TRUVIA for quality and great taste, delivering the first natural, zero calorie sweetness people have been asking for,” said Marcelo Montero, president, Cargill Health & Nutrition. Beginning in Nature TRUVIA rebiana begins with a leaf. Leaves from the stevia plant, a shrub native to Paraguay and today commercially grown in China, are harvested and dried, then steeped in fresh water in a process similar to that of making tea. This process unlocks the best-tasting part of the leaf, which is then purified to make a food-grade sweet ingredient. The finished product is the pure sweetness of rebiana, which is 200 times sweeter than sugar. TRUVIA natural sweetener has a clean, sweet taste that is consistent as an ingredient for food and beverages. “This new, natural sweetener leverages Cargill’s expertise in specialty food ingredients, agronomy, food science and safety as well as consumer insight and marketing capabilities,” said Steve Snyder, vice president, Cargill Health & Nutrition. “The company is positioned to manage the development of this new sweetener from the first plantings in the field to formulation for foods and beverages, all the way to the product that will sweeten your morning coffee.” Scientific Studies Research published electronically today in the peer-reviewed, scientific journal Food and Chemical Toxicology clearly establishes the safety of rebiana for use as a natural, zero-calorie sweetener in food and beverages. A rigorous safety evaluation program – the first of its kind to evaluate rebiana – addressed unresolved questions and verified the safety of the product for use as a general purpose sweetener. The research program included metabolism, safety, intake, stability and human studies that complement the body of previously published research on purified steviol glycosides, the sweet components of the stevia leaf. Background on Stevia The stevia plant has been grown, harvested and used in South America to sweeten foods and beverages for more than 200 years. The plant was discovered by the Guarani natives of Paraguay who used its leaves to sweeten drinks. In 1931, two French food-researchers isolated the sweet components of the stevia leaf. Consumers in Japan have been using stevia commercially for more than three decades, and today, stevia represents 40 percent of the country’s low- or zero-calorie sweetener market. Because rebiana begins with a leaf, supply is contingent upon the strength of the stevia crop. Over many years, Cargill has built a strong and consistent stevia supply chain in anticipation of launching TRUVIA natural sweetener, and has a dedicated staff on the ground and partner companies in key regions around the world supervising production and ensuring good stewardship of land and water. Today, one stevia plant yields enough rebiana for 30 six-ounce cups of coffee. For more information, visit www.allabout rebiana.com or For more information, visit www.TRUVIA.com. |

Cranberry Powder May Safeguard Arterial FlexibilityMOMENCE, IL—Though commonly associated with urinary tract health, cranberries may also provide heart health benefits according to new research from Futureceuticals, Inc.Researchers tested VitaCran, a standardized cranberry powder, for its ability to inhibit Elastase activity. Elastase is an enzyme that can lead to hardening of the arteries, a factor associated with the development of coronary artery disease. According to study results, VitaCran inhibits Elastase Activity in a dose-dependant manner. Elastase weakens elastin, a protein that supports the arteries’ flexible framework. Break down of the elastin proteins in an artery’s structural framework results in stiffness in the arterial wall. Arterial rigidity is a predominant factor in the development of hypertension. Initial test results show promise for the use of VitaCran in heart health applications. Further testing is ongoing to confirm positive heart health benefits. VitaCran testing was conducted within the framework of the new TargeTest method of analysis developed by Dr. Zbigniew Pietrzkowski, head of research and development at FutureCeuticals, Inc. TargeTest focuses on examining food materials for acute effects on selected targets in the blood. Published research has associated these targets with chronic health conditions. Chart Corp. AcquiredChart Corporation (Paterson, NJ)has been acquired by Naturex SA (Avignon, France). Chart Corp. specializes in the production of natural flavouring ingredients for the beverage and flavor industries. The strategic move further expands the presence of Naturex in the global natural ingredients market.Naturex and Chart Corporation boast strong synergies, both in terms of their products and their customers. Chart Corporation adds to the Naturex product lines a comprehensive range of flavoring plant extracts in solid and fluid forms. Solid extracts are semi-solid, paste-like extracts that are ideal for flavor applications. Fluid extracts are botanical extracts in a liquid form that offer the advantage of being water soluble. Fluid extracts are in high demand by beverage manufacturers seeking cost-efficient solutions for ingredient solubility. Naturex offers oleoresins, essential oils and flavoring extracts through its NAT’Arom line. Jacques Dikansky, president and CEO of Naturex said "This acquisition strengthens our position in the natural flavouring ingredients market and further establishes Naturex’s position as one of the global leaders in the field of plant extracts." Claudia Molloy, president and CEO of Chart Corporation, said “I am delighted with the combination of both companies, it will enable us to provide the best quality service to our current customers and to compete more effectively for new business.” The Naturex group continued to enjoy sustained development in 2007 through organic growth (pro forma growth of 13% at constant USD rates for the first nine months of 2007), as well as the successful acquisition of two other companies: Hammer Pharma in January and HP Botanicals in February, both based in Milan, Italy. Additionally, Naturex established a UK sales office, Naturex Ltd., based in Oxford. Naturex has also launched several new products this year, enhancing its products portfolio with innovative offerings such as FraxiPure, a patent-pending extract of Fraxinus Excelsior seed targeting the growing weight-loss market. Naturex expects to expand its network in 2008 by establishing a subsidiary in China and opening a sales office in Germany which will also cover the Benelux countries. |

Frost & Sullivan Awards Naturex Leadership PrizeLONDON--Frost & Sullivan awarded Naturex S.A. a Market Penetration Leadership Award in the European natural extracts market. Compelling growth strategies including expansion into new geographic areas, customer proximity, homogeneous and aggressive pricing, effective backward integration and reduced time to market have all enabled Naturex S.A. to establish itself as a dominant participant in the natural extracts market.“Within a short span of 15 years, Naturex S.A. has become a global leader in the botanical extracts market,” noted Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Chandrasekhar S. “With its unique strategies, Naturex S.A. has been able to expand its global market share from 3 per cent in 2003 to approximately 9 per cent in 2007.” Naturex S.A. has been involved in a number of strategic alliances and acquisitions including PureWorld Inc, Hammer Pharma and HP Botanicals. This is in line with its external growth strategy, which has provided access to newer markets while improving penetration into current ones. “Naturex S.A. is one of the few plant extracts manufacturers with an aggressive and homogeneous pricing strategy across all markets,” observed Chandrasekhar. “This emphasises the confidence that the company has in its product quality, reinforces its image as a truly global company and reiterates the consistency and standardisation of its products”. Naturex has increased its sales force, offering enhanced client service for better customer retention. “The company’s comprehensive product portfolio spans more than 350 innovative botanical extracts catering to the nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industry and has helped Naturex S.A. achieve an organic growth of about 12 per cent –more than double the rate at which the market is growing,” stated Chandrasekhar. “The company’s commitment to constantly enhancing its product portfolio with innovative offerings is reflected in the fact that nearly 4 per cent of its sales are re-invested into R&D initiatives.” An exclusive mechanism has enabled Naturex to accelerate the ‘time to market’; when the industry average is six months, Naturex S.A.’s ranges between a few days and a few months. For instance, the launch of its Fraxinus Excelsior extract in June 2007 took only four months from conception to commercialisation. One of its strategies for providing consistently high-quality products has been its symbiotic tie-ups with farmers around the globe for procurement of raw materials. In addition to the direct access, this has enabled Naturex S.A. to ensure the reproducibility, traceability and high quality of its finished products. “Naturex S.A. recognises the significance of these associations and has been actively involved in supporting the welfare and growth of farmers,” commented Chandrasekhar. “The 2007 plan to promote the Peruvian Maca growers and communities is a standing testimony to its business model based on effective backward integration and giving back to the communities where it does business.” The Frost & Sullivan Award for Market Penetration Leadership of the Year Award is presented each year to the company that has demonstrated excellence in capturing market share within their industry. The recipient has demonstrated strategic excellence in product innovation, marketing, and sales strategies that have resulted in the largest gain in market share over the past 2-3 years. |

Finnish Study Supports EnterolactoneLOCARNO, SWITZERLAND & EASTON, PA—A review study published in the June 19th issue of Molecular Nutrition & Food Research has shown that human lignan enterolactone and its precursors, such as 7-hyroxymatairesinol, may modulate estrogen signaling and inhibit or delay the growth of mammary cancer.“This new study is exciting in that it illuminates previous research and puts it into strong perspective in supporting the role of hydroxymatairesinol in raising enterolactone levels, which continue to be shown as playing a key role in lowering breast cancer risk,” says Robin Ward, vice president of commercial operations for Linnea, SA. The study, entitled, “Role of dietary lignans in the reduction of breast cancer risk,” (Saarinen NM, et al. Mol Nutr Food Res. 2007 Jun 19) pointed out that “there is intriguing evidence for enterolactone as a modulator of estrogen signaling.” Estrogen signaling is a known pathway for the potential development of breast cancer. Breast cancer, according to the study authors, is the most prevalent form of cancer affecting European women, logging in at 27 percent of all new cases per year. There are several hormonal factors, as well as nutrition and lifestyle factors, associated with risk and development of breast cancer. Dietary factors alone, according to WHO, are estimated to account for 30 percent of all cancer cases in Western nations. The report discusses the relationship between dietary lignans and risk of breast cancer. There are nearly 500 various plant lignans such as seeds, whole grains, vegetables, fruits and berries. Lignans are also present in beverages such as teas, wine and coffee. The authors point out that it has long been noted that the typical Western diet includes approximately 0.15 to 1.1 mg lignan ingestion per day, but this percentage may now be higher due to the more recent discoveries of other plant lignans such as 7-hydroxymatairesinol. According to the study, high levels of enterolactone in serum or urine are associated with lower risk of breast cancer. Several lignans, notably 7-hydroxymatairesinol have been shown to inhibit mammary tumorigenesis. Two previous studies on DMBA-induced SD rats showed that doses of 7-hydroxymatairesinol reduced tumor volume and growth. One study commenced dose of 15 mg/kg body weight a day from week 9 through 16.5 after initiation, and the other commenced one week prior to initiation and weeks 9 to 17 after initiation with 4.7 mg per kg body weight a day. (1,2) The plant lignan 7-hydroxymatairesinol is the only lignan that converts directly in the gut to enterolactone, making it the most efficient dietary enterolactone precursor. Other dietary lignans necessitate an extra conversion step in the pathway of enterolactone production. “HMRlignan, available exclusively from Linnea, is derived from Norway Spruce (Picea abies), which has the highest sustainable concentration of 7-hydroxymatairesinol, and is therefore the most economical and qualitative source for dietary supplements and functional foods,” explained Donald J. Brown, N.D. “As continued research substantiates HMR benefits by boosting levels of enterolactone, HMRlignan™ remains the far superior choice for products geared to men and women are concerned about raising enterolactone to healthy and sustainably viable levels to assist in cardiovascular protection and protection against development of breast and prostate cancers.” HMRlignan, available from Linnea, offers a convenient, low-dose and highly bioavailable solution to supplement dietary lignans intake and boost circulating enterolactone levels. HMRlignan is standardized to contain 80,000 mg/100 g of lignans and the daily dosage to raise enterolactone levels is 10 - 30 mg daily. For more information, visit www.www.hmrlignan.com. |

Omega-3 Oils For Shelf Stable Heat-Processed ProductsNORTH BERGEN, NJ –Alina omega-3 fatty acids improve the flavor and shelf stability of heat-processed dairy, beverage and savory products.Laurent Leduc, vice president, marketing and business development, Frutarom USA Inc., explained that the new Alina line is a patented plant source of omega-3 fatty acids from Salvia seed and is derived through a natural extraction process. “Alina has a more neutral flavor profile, allowing for fortification without negative taste or texture impact,” said Leduc. “Alina offers greater stability in baked goods, bread, dairy, cereal and wide range of beverage products such as health drinks. While it’s true that there are other vegetable sources of omega-3, such as flaxseed, canola (rapeseed) and walnuts oils, these sources are less stable toward oxidation.” Alina is easy to use, and provides a substantial percentage of omega-3 to serving sizes. It is stable in pasteurization processes and also in baking. Leduc added that Alina’s odorless, neutral flavor and allergen free makes it ideal for children’s formulations. Salvia oil contains more than 50% alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Unique to omega-3 oils, ALA essential fatty acids belong to the group of polyunsaturated fatty acids, commonly known as PUFAs. ALA, along with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are important forms of omega-3 found in food. Once ingested, the body converts ALA partly to EPA and DHA. The health benefits of ALA are well documented and include a reduction in stroke risk, addressing ADHD conditions in children, improving cognitive function and supporting eye health. ALA is known to improve omega-3/omega-6 balance in the diet. About 2 to 4 times more omega-6 than omega-3 constitutes a healthy diet. The current ratio is more like 20:1, representing an imbalance that according to many researchers is increasing and contributing to the rising rate of inflammatory disorders. Leduc pointed out that companies who have incorporated Alina into their product formulations have achieved remarkable success. “When Tara, a leading dairy company in Israel, made a healthier milk product using Alina in combination with calcium and vitamin D fortifiers and supported it with a strong promotional campaign, their market share increased by more than 400 percent,” he reported. Jennifer Czerner, technical business manager, Frutarom USA, noted, “Facts like these demonstrate Alina’s proven ability to increase market success and translate into new opportunities for our customers. Our technical and marketing team is ready to work with existing and new customers, from assisting in formulation development to creating the marketing message strategy and identifying co-branding options.” Technical and marketing executives from Frutarom will be attending the 2007 IFT Exhibit in Chicago, as will Frutarom representatives and Alina product developers. They will be scheduling meetings with customers to discuss the wide range of possibilities that Alina brings to new product development. Those interested in scheduling an exclusive meeting with Frutarom’s technical team and Alina product developers are encouraged to contact Ms. Czerner at 757/224-8394 or via email at jczerner@us.frutarom.com. 000 Size Liquid Capsules Offer Dosage, Stability AdvantagesGREENWOOD, SC – New 000-sized Licaps capsules offer a 1200 mg fill capacity, roughly equivalent to the most common soft gel size, and accommodate the fill of a 22 minim soft gel depending on the bulk density of the liquid formulation. Capsugel, the supplier, views the new size as a “superior delivery alternative to soft gels” in the dietary supplement industry.Favorite formulas from all category segments that were previously encapsulated in size 0 and 00 Licaps can now be delivered in the 000 size. “Licaps capsules are the growing alternative with advantages over soft gels,” said Robert Whitelaw, director of sales, marketing, and business development for Capsugel’s Americas Region. Advantages include protection against oxidation and potential degradation of the liquid, taste and odor masking, no plasticizers, additives, allergens, GMOs and fewer excipients that soft gels. Capsule are filled with liquid, then nitrogen flushed to eliminate oxygen from the final sealed product, evidenced by a nitrogen bubble visible through the transparent capsule. Because the capsule has no plasticizers, it provides an effective barrier to oxygen transmission. The robust seal further enhances the barrier to oxygen. Capsugel’s patented liquid encapsulation by microspray (LEMS) capsule sealing process creates eight times the seal zone area of a banded capsule, resulting in no need for banding and an effective one-piece fused capsule. “The Licaps market is growing by leaps and bounds. Development of the 000 size is an enormous extension of this extremely popular liquid delivery form,” Whitelaw said. While the 000 is available to all dietary supplement markets, this new size is especially good news for the fish oil segment and the sports nutrition segment – both of which are popular and booming. “Fish oil supplements commonly are sold in one-gram dosages and can benefit from a Licaps capsule that will effectively mask taste and smell,” said Whitelaw. “The sports nutrition segment is looking for bigger and more potent dosages in one big package – delivered by size 000 Licaps with plenty of options for custom color and branding.” In addition to delivering standard products in the 000 Licaps, Capsugel will also help customers customize liquid-fill formulas for this largest Licaps size. EU Grants CardiaBeat Novel Food StatusMIGDAL HA’EMEQ, ISRAEL – The European Commission has approved novel food status for Enzymotec’s CardiaBeat sterol-based matrix, enabling immediate sales and distribution in the EEU for both functional foods and dietary supplements.CardiaBeat can reduce additional cardiovascular risk factors beyond cholesterol, according to Enzymotec. So far it has been sold exclusively as a dietary supplement in the United States, Israel, and Southeast Asia. "Plant sterol-esters have long been one of the strongest market leaders in the European Functional scene. Unfortunately, they have almost reached to the point of being commodities with only limited capacity to create additional value to the consumer,” said says Ms. Michal Haim-Bravman, marketing manager. “We believe that CardiaBeat enables the whole sterol-market to advance to the next level, by its unique combinations with monounsaturated and Omega-3 fatty acids, and by its capacity to reduce triglycerides and enable optimal fat soluble vitamins absorption.” Earlier this year, CardiaBeat won the NutrAward prize at the SupplyExpo 2007. Criteria for choosing CardiaBeat included its efficacy, safety, innovativeness, scientific merit and market potential. Enzymotec develops and produces novel, lipid-based ingredients such as SharpPS, SharpPS SILVER and SharpPS GOLD for improving cognitive performance, and InFat for balanced nutrition for babies and toddlers. |

Meta-Analysis Points To Long-Term Health Benefits Of Tonalin CLALA GRANGE,IL – A new meta-analysis of human studies published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (AJCN: 2007; 85:1203-11 adds further evidence to the potential long-term health benefits of Tonalin CLA, according to Cognis, producer of the licensed ingredient. The meta-analysis examined the efficacy of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and body composition. The study reported that Tonalin CLA could enhance overall health by effectively reducing body fat and potentially preventing weight and fat regain commonly experienced by adults, especially yo-yo dieters. Lead author Leah Whigham, Ph.D., from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, concluded, “When the body of evidence is considered as a whole, CLA does have a beneficial effect on human body composition. Although this effect is modest, it could be important if accumulated over time, especially in an environment where continuous, gradual weight gain is the norm in the adult population." The meta-analysis analyzed 18 eligible CLA studies, 15 of which included Tonalin CLA. To qualify for the meta-analysis, studies had to be longitudinal randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled human clinical trials using validated body composition measurements. Dr. Whigham and her colleagues concluded that among participants given 3.2 g a day, CLA produces a significant but modest reduction of fat mass of .2 pounds a week or .8 pounds a month compared to participants in the placebo group. “This meta-analysis clearly indicated a dose response effect for CLA demonstrating that 3.2 grams of CLA daily produces a significant decrease in body fat mass,” said David Cai, Ph.D., senior scientist, Cognis Nutrition & Health. “The meta-analysis provides further scientific evidence that Tonalin® CLA can be a safe and effective option for people interested in improving and stabilizing their body composition. When taken as part of a healthy lifestyle, Tonalin CLA could have the potential to help guard against the small, often cumulative weight gains that contribute to ‘weight creep’ over time. Research suggests that these cumulative fat and weight gains over the years as we age could pose high risks for chronic diseases, so early intervention is increasingly important.” Dr. Cai explained that the meta-analysis helps to show why some clinical studies have failed to find a significant effect of CLA on body composition. According to the authors, these trials were too short in duration, did not have sufficient numbers of subjects, and lacked the statistical power to detect the difference in changes in body composition. The meta-analysis includes findings of a landmark study by Dr. Jean-Michael Gaullier3. His research revealed that Tonalin CLA not only reduced body fat mass in overweight adults by as much as nine percent in one year, but also helped participants keep off the lost fat for a subsequent year during the follow-up trial. Cognis’ Tonalin CLA is derived from natural safflower oil, is stimulant-free, and is the most clinically tested CLA on the market. As the study authors pointed out, with regard to both safety and efficacy, CLA products enriched in both c9, t11, and t10, c12 isomers are preferable to those containing 4 isomers or single isomers. Tonalin CLA meets high purity specifications in a 50:50 ratio of the two bioactive CLA isomers. For more information, visit www.cognis.com. |

Frutarom Introduces Bladder Control Ingredients At SupplySide EastNORTH BERGEN, NJ—One in six adults over 40 experiences discomfort or anxiety from an overactive bladder. Go-Less, introduced during SupplySide East, is said to be the first clinically proven formulation to target incontinence symptoms.Go-Less combines Frutarom’s EFLA 940 special pumpkin seed extract with SoyLife’s soy germ isoflavone extract. Laurent Leduc, vice president, marketing and business development for Frutarom USA Inc., explained that EFLA 940 is a water-soluble extract that contains the complete spectrum of polar and semi-polar constituents. “A proprietary process ensures the highly selective removal of fat-soluble components from the pumpkin seed extract, allowing for increased stability and solubility with no rancidity,” he said. Leduc also explained that SoyLife patented-protected soy germ isoflavone is backed by more than 30 clinical studies. “It’s widely believed that soy isoflavones help balance hormone levels in the body,” said Leduc. “It not only contains the class of phytoestrogens that function in this way, it is also contains other phytonutrients that are associated with good health.” Jocelyn Mathern, R.D., Frutarom’s technical specialist, explained that an overactive bladder is actually a form of urinary incontinence that causes embarrassment and compromises quality of life. “While we generally associate incontinence with older people, it is not considered a normal part of the aging process,” said Mathern. “Several human studies in both men and women have shown the ingredients in Go-Less to be effective at supporting bladder health. The blend was also well-tolerated, as the studies found no serious side effects.” In one study conducted over a six-week period, 39 women between the ages of 52 and 86 years were given a supplement that combined the Frutarom Go-Less ingredients. Subjects reported a decrease in urination throughout the day and night. According to Mathern, sleep satisfaction was substantially improved and episodes of incontinence were decreased. Mathern also pointed to a study among men with pollakuria, a condition that interrupts sleep during the night because of the urge to urinate. Two groups of men over the age of 65 participated in the six-week study. Among those who were treated with the combined ingredients in the Frutarom blend, more than 86% said their symptoms were substantially alleviated. Complete details about pre-clinical in vivo research and other studies are available from Frutarom’s technical team. According to Frutarom, a daily dosage of 600 milligrams can be used in applications such as capsules, tablets, softgels, beverages and bars. For more information, visit www.frutarom.com. |
