Kemin Industries’ (Des Moines, IA) spearmint extract ingredient Neumentix Phenolic Complex K110-42, targeting cognitive health, has now obtained self-affirmed Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status. The company announced that, after an extensive review by an independent panel of experts, the water-extracted spearmint ingredient can now be used in a variety of functional food and beverage applications, per FDA safety criteria.
The ingredient contains more than 50 phenolic constituents, including non-GMO lines of polyphenol-rich spearmint extract developed by Kemin. According to the supplier, clinical studies have shown that Neumentix supports cognitive health, working memory performance, and healthy sleep patterns in adults. “We are seeing increased demand for foods and supplements that can naturally help people increase their productivity throughout the day,” said Kim Colletti, global cognition product manager at Kemin Human Health and Nutrition, in a press release.
Anita Noria, president of Kemin, added: “The Neumentix GRAS status enables our customers to expand into the functional foods market and help further improve the lives of consumers by offering cognitive-health benefits.”
