NSF Brings CarbonFund to Sustainability Offerings

Through an agreement with the Carbonfund.org Foundation, third-party certifier NSF International (Ann Arbor, MI) is now administering “CarbonFree” sustainable product certifications.

The CarbonFree program provides manufacturers with a way to communicate the environmental sustainability of a product. The certifier—in this case, NSF—uses Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) to determine green house gas emission created over a product’s life cycle. The calculated emissions estimate can be offset by validated renewable energy and energy efficiency projects, ultimately warranting a CarbonFree label on a product.

The decision to make CarbonFree certifications available is a response to increasing consumer demand for corporate responsibility and the potential of government regulation in the future. NSF explains how the project works:

“The CarbonFree product certification program uses Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) to determine the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over a product’s entire life cycle. GHG emissions (expressed as carbon dioxide equivalents) that cannot be reduced or eliminated from the products’ life cycle are offset or ‘neutralized’ with third-party validated renewable energy, energy efficiency, and forestry carbon offset projects”

NSF says that CarbonFree is the first carbon-neutral product label in North America. The organization will administer its program through the NSF Sustainability division.
