The water-soluble powder ingredient will now be available across Europe for use in food supplements.
Mibelle Biochemistry (Buchs, Switzerland) has announced that its skin beauty ingredient, PhytoCellTech Md Nu, has gained safety approval as a novel food from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). As a result, the water-soluble powder ingredient will now be available across Europe for use in food supplements.
According to Mibelle, PhytoCellTec Md Nu is a biomass from cultured callus cells derived from a Swiss apple variety that is produced using a breakthrough sustainable in-house developed technology. The Swiss apple variety, called Uttwiler Spätlauber, is known to keep well in long-term storage. The company explains in a press release that through winter the skin of the apple does not shrivel. As a result of these characteristics, the apple may carry some anti-aging and longevity factors, says Mibelle.
Because the apple is on the endangered plants list compiled by the Swiss National Action Plan for the Conservation of Plant Genetic Resources in Food and Agriculture, the technology developed by Mibelle, PhytoCellTec, allows the company to produce large quantities of high-quality biomass by using one tiny piece of apple.
